Tom Cooper

Tom Cooper's musical influences are numerous and varied. Drawing inspiration from elements of soul and blues, Leonard Cohen and Jimmy Webb, Lennon and McCartney, to his classic country vocal stylings, likened to Johnny Cash and George Jones.

With a love for music and a lifetime of work, it was time to start over. ?
Tom Cooper has always made music. In the earlier part of his life, he played with bands and by himself, traveling from Ohio to California and everywhere in between. But when the dream of living from music alone fizzled, he didn’t quit. For most of his life, he has been building a collection of songs written at night at bars or while sitting at the cafe in Paris while he spent his days behind a desk. Music has always been his passion but the course of his life took him elsewhere.
?
The passing of the love of his life lit the fire necessary to put Tom on the path he was always meant to take; to pick up his guitar again, dust off a lifetime of songs and commit to sharing his music with the world. A new dream was born! In no time, he made his way to the recording studio and began to tour the northern Virginia area.??
Tom's music is shaped by the artists of his past experiences and a vision of his future. His voice resonates with the pains and sorrows of life, but also the joys. The real draw of his songwriting is that Tom does not dwell on the negative; he has a wonderful sense of humor about love that gives a hopeful perspective to the hopelessness of heartache.

A Band Called "Death" - The First Punk Band

Death is a garage rock and protopunk demo band formed in Detroit, Michigan, in 1971 by brothers Bobby (bass, vocals), David (guitar), and Dannis (drums) Hackney. The African American trio started out as an R&B band but switched to rock after seeing The Who play.[1] Seeing Alice Cooper play was also an inspiration.[2]

Music critic Peter Margasak retrospectively wrote that David "pushed the group in a hard-rock direction that presaged punk, and while this certainly didn’t help them find a following in the mid-70s, today it makes them look like visionaries."[2]

The band broke up by 1977 but reformed in 2009 when the Drag City label released their 70s demos for the first time.[3] In 1964, the three young Hackney brothers (David, Bobby and Dannis) were sat down by their father to witness The Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The following day, David found a discarded guitar in an alley and set about learning to play. Brothers Bobby and Dannis soon followed suit and they began playing music together. The brothers practiced and recorded early demos in a room in the family home and performed their earliest gigs from their garage.[4]

Originally calling themselves Rock Fire Funk Express, guitarist David convinced his brothers to change the name of the band to Death. "His concept was spinning death from the negative to the positive. It was a hard sell," Bobby Hackney recalled in 2010.[5]

In 1974 at Detroit’s United Sound Studios with engineer Jim Vitti, they recorded seven songs written by David and Bobby. According to the Hackney family, Columbia Records president Clive Davis funded the recording sessions, but implored the band to change its name to something more commercially palatable than Death. When the Hackneys refused, Davis ceased his support.[6]

The band only recorded seven songs instead of the planned dozen. The following year they self-released (on their label Tryangle) a single taken from the sessions: "Politicians in My Eyes" b/w "Keep on Knocking," in a run of just 500 copies. The Hackney brothers ended the band in 1977. The brothers then moved to Burlington, Vermont and released two albums of gospel rock as The 4th Movement in the early 1980s. David moved back to Detroit in 1982, and died of lung cancer in 2000. Bobby and Dannis still reside in Vermont and lead the reggae band Lambsbread.[7]

In 2008 the sons of Bobby Hackney (Julian, Urian, and Bobby Jr.) started a band called Rough Francis, covering the songs of Death after discovering the old recordings in their parents' attic.[8]

In 2009, Drag City Records released all seven Death songs from their 1974 United Sound sessions on CD and LP under the title ...For the Whole World to See. In September 2009, a reformed Death played three shows with original members Bobby and Dannis Hackney, with Lambsbread guitarist Bobbie Duncan taking the place of the late David Hackney.[9]

In 2010, their song "Freakin' Out" was used in an episode of the television program How I Met Your Mother entitled "False Positive" (Season 6, Episode 12).[10] During a 2010 performance at the Boomslang Festival in Lexington, Kentucky the band announced that Drag City would release a new album with demos and rough cuts that predate the 1975 sessions. The album Spiritual • Mental • Physical was released in January 2011.[11] In 2011, their song "You're A Prisoner" was used in the film Kill the Irishman. [12] An independent documentary film about the band titled A Band Called Death, directed by Jeff Howlett and Mark Covino, was released in 2012.[1]

Deport Justin Bieber? White House Must Respond to Online Petition

Deport Justin Bieber? White House Must Respond to Online Petition By Ashley Lee, The Hollywood Reporter | January 29, 2014 3:44 PM EST

Less than a week after Justin Bieber was arrested in Miami Beach, more than 100,000 people have signed a White House petition to have the Canadian singer deported.
The pop star -- who was charged with DUI, resisting arrest and having an expired driver's license after he was observed drag racing with fellow musician Khalil Sharieff at 4:13 a.m. on Thursday -- is living in the U.S. thanks to an O-1 visa, issued to anyone with "extraordinary ability or achievement" in their field, including the arts. Any conviction for an aggravated offense could see Bieber's work visa revoked, prompting immigration officials to toss him out of the country.

SMILE!

"We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture," reads the online petition. "We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug abusing Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked. He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nation's youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society."
But the Miami arrest likely won't affect Bieber's immigration status, according to the AP.
U.S. immigration law states that authorities do not revoke an individual's visa unless the person has been convicted of a violent crime or been sentenced to more than one year imprisonment. For a first DUI offense, there is no minimum sentence and a maximum of six months, a fine of $250 to $500, and 50 hours of community service. For anyone under 21, there is an automatic six-month license suspension. A first conviction for drag racing carries a sentence of up to six months, a fine of $500 to $1,000 and a one-year license suspension.
According to immigration attorney Ira Kurzban, Bieber is "not subject to deportation because of a DUI offense, nor is driving with an expired license a deportable offense." Those offenses wouldn't keep Bieber from being readmitted into the U.S., either.
Bieber's arraignment has been scheduled for Feb. 14. The musician does not have to be present for that arraignment, THR has confirmed with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office. His attorney, Roy Black, may be able to handle the proceedings on his behalf. During the arraignment, prosecutors will formally file charges against the 19-year-old singer, and a plea will be entered.
The White House has yet to issue a response to the petition, which is required once a signature goal is met. At press time, the petition has 119,000 supporters.

New CD Album Release: Plunky & Oneness / Never Too Late - Release Date: 2/11/2014
Never Too Late, the new album by Afro-funk, jazz veteran, J. Plunky Branch and his group Plunky & Oneness bridges genres and generations. The ambitious 16-song collection includes neo-soul, nu-jazz, and hip-hop songs about love, wisdom and purposeful partying. With Never Too Late Plunky & Oneness prove that eclecticism is no vice and variety can be its own reward.

Produced by Plunky and his talented son, J. “Fire” Branch, Never Too Late is a collage of musical cross references and transmutations. The album begins with neo soul love songs, and it ends with go-go and funk. But, it is the meaningful message music in the middle that is the hip-hop jazz, heart and soul of the album. This is cutting edge stuff produced by Fire sampling Plunky’s songs from the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s and dubbing in new live performances and looped beats. This is father and son using past and present techniques to create future music.

Funk is grown folks music. Fused with hip-hop, it can be music that delivers the word. On Never Too Late Plunky plays the role of the OG, the “Original Griot”, using lyrics to drop knowledge and to encourage and inspire. He is the “Old Guru” who spits, spouts, and speaks on philosophies of love and life, and advocates getting funky with it. The songs, riding on waves of urban rhythms, live music and deejay effects, convey lessons learned, urging us to “Be About the Future” while feeling our “Tribal Vibe” and acknowledging “We are One.”

Never Too Late, Plunky’s 25th album, is primarily new and original music; however there are two cover songs and a bonus track in the collection. John Legend’s “Tonight (Best You Ever Had),” the album’s first single, is a saxophone-led go-go instrumental with sexy female vocal hooks. Frankie Beverly’s classic, “We Are One,” also rendered as a sax and vocals combo, is still a soulful call to unifying love. The bonus track, “Tableau Noir,” is collaboration with famed French rapper, Akhenaton of the IAM Band. It is a rap song about dark times in the world being like images on a blackboard which can be erased.

The core Oneness group members breathe life into the music on the album. The sultry and soulful Charlayne “Chyp” Green is featured on vocals throughout. Young, VA-based musicians, keyboardist, J. L. Harris and guitarist, Jose Pomier, create shimmering, melodic tonal centers within the grooves. Bassist P. Muzi Branch, Plunky’s brother and long-time collaborator, is still thumping and pumping the bottom of the funk – in sync with Fire’s hip-hop beats and electronic percussion.

Time travel happens when rhythm meets change, when vibrations are altered and re-ordered, when fault lines are crossed, when generations are bridged, when memories create new visions. Never Too Late is all about timeless lessons of love and life and locomotion. And it’s even more about Plunk phunk & the oneness thereof…

Never Too Late CD Album: 16 Tracks, Total run time: 70 minutes Genres: Nu-jazz, funk, Hip-hop, R&B, soul

David Cassidy Arrested for Drunk Driving ... AGAIN!

David Cassidy

Arrested for Drunk Driving

... AGAIN!

1/11/2014 8:45 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF
EXCLUSIVE
0111-david-cassidy-tmzDavid Cassidy was arrested Friday night for driving drunk ... TMZ has learned.

David had just exited the 405 freeway in LA when cops say they saw him make an illegal right onto a surface street ... this according to law enforcement sources.

The cop approached the vehicle and says he smelled alcohol. He ordered David out of the car and administered a field sobriety test ... which David flunked.

To make matters worse, David blew .19 ... more than twice the legal limit.

Cassidy was hauled off to jail, booked for driving under the influence and released hours later.

If this sounds like the same old song ... it is. David was arrested last year in New York for DUI ... as well as once in Florida back in 2010.

This time he'll almost certainly get jail time.

Inside North Korea's music scene

Pyongyang goes pop: Inside North Korea's music scene For the first blog of our short series, our intrepid music reporter is put under house arrest with nothing but the EastEnders theme tune to listen to. That'll teach him not to pay bribes ...

Korea-minded ... Alex Hoban in Pyongyang

If someone had fulfilled Pyongyang's request to pack Eric Clapton off to North Korea, perhaps all that bother on the divided peninsula would never have started. That is what the hermit government of the north reckons, at least, as one of the less pressing Wikileak cables recently revealed that Kim Jong-il's second son, Kim Jong-chol, was "a great fan" of the rock legend and that a Clapton performance in the capital "could be an opportunity to build goodwill". Using pop to build bridges is perhaps naive, especially in the context of a potential nuclear face-off, but maybe we shouldn't rule out the idea.

If you ask a North Korean their true feelings about pretty much anything they'll stick to whatever the party line tells them they should think (which is why so many tourists get frustrated after probing about General Kim's next move). But ask the right questions and the facade that greets most outsiders will occasionally be broached with genuine warmth. During trips I've made in and around the hermit kingdom over the past year, I've used one uncontroversial topic of conversation to do just that. It seems talking about music is one way for North Koreans to relate their perspectives on the world without being politically controversial.

Pop diplomacy will not solve territorial disputes or prevent governments going head-to-head, but it does offer another perspective on North Koreans. Pop weaves its way into North Korea in unexpected ways. Last September, I was held under 24-hour house arrest in the outpost of Raijin after refusing to pay a bribe. The most perturbing part of the experience was not the fact there was no guarantee of release, but that the hotel foyer we were held in had the EastEnders theme tune playing on loop for the duration of the internment through a croaky speaker.

Perhaps the aim was mental attrition; to irritate us into paying bribes by reminding us of the east London we'd left behind and may never see again. It didn't work – I'm from Putney. Eccentric glimpses of the world North Korea left behind are not so few and far between – in this series I'll be revealing more from inside the secret state: the truth about Michael Jackson's North Korean debut; introducing the best of North Korean pop and revealing the Communist cadre's opinion of Jarvis Cocker. Come join me for the ride.
