love singing so much that I'm sure I was born singing. I can't go through a
whole day without singing.''
Music
has always been an integral part of my life. Being part of the church choir was
a haven for me at a very young age. I began on the piano then was encouraged to
learn the accordion professionally at the age of 12. Although I learnt music to
a reasonable level, I always felt driven to play by ear. College days saw me
busking (singing/saxing) with a Jazz Band. There I was talent-scouted by a
hotel-manager to play some gigs.
Years
later I came back to the Tenor Saxophone again. I felt such a strong connection
with this instrument. In a courageous moment, a few years ago, I threw away all
my music/chord charts/keys and decided to play by ear, no matter what, no
matter where it did or didn't take me. I don't regret that decision. It's both
terrifying and exhilarating to play like this.
For the
last 15 years I've quietly been working hard on my Art and Music and Singing at
moorethanart.com.
As a
vocalist, I would say it has taken this time to find my own Jazz Voice. There's
always more to learn and further to climb. There's always that feeling of
walking a fine tight-rope between challenge and frustration -of searching for
more: more colours, more depth, more feeling. So I like that my surname is now
Moore!
I
discovered Steve's astonishing playing on an online music site, where he is
regarded as one of the top guitarists in Canada. I was blown-away by the depth
and sensitivity of his emotional playing. ''Another Gray Day'' was the first
song we wrote together in 2013.
Steve
writes the original song and plays guitar. It's a rare gift that he then is
able to share this whole project with me, allowing me a free-hand to put my own
vision onto his songs. So I usually add vocals, my tenor saxophone and any
number of other instruments I like to tinker with, plus sometimes some
sound-effects.
I think
because I approach my music as a painter, I like to think in terms of layers of
sound, just as you would add layers to a canvas. With this musical paintbrush,
I attempt to create beautiful soundscapes and meaningful soulful songs that
touch people and immerse them in the landscape of the music.

Multi-instrumentalist
Steve Parisien is regarded as one of the top guitar players in Canada. As a
song-writer Steve Parisien writes beautiful heart-felt songs using
improvisation as the basis for his music. And you'll find him right at the top
of the charts, in many of the worlds top jazz sites.
I grew
up in the music business that my father had and started learning the piano at
the age of 5. By the time I was 8 years old I had learned the organ and my
father used me as a sales-tool to sell instruments! It was one of those 'look,
if this young child can play, so can you!' things, and it apparently worked.
All I knew was, I was having a lot of fun performing.
Whilst
learning the conservatory system, I truly learned what music was all about from
my father, who recognized then nurtured my ability to play by ear. I soon began
performing at local T.V. shows, fairs, and shopping centres.
By the
time I was 13, I had a real interest in the guitar, which has remained with me
ever since.
For a
long time, I just wrote my own arrangements of different tunes - but came to
realize recently, that I really should write my own material. A few musician
friends of mine had commented, 'it's about time'!
My
passion now is writing music, and get no greater pleasure than having someone
else do their own interpretation of my work.
Laurel
Moore is one of those wonderfully talented people I speak of. Her ability in
writing lyrics along with her silky smooth voice and the connection to that of
my compositions keeps me 'pumped up' in continuing to write.
