Less than a week after Justin Bieber was arrested in Miami Beach, more than 100,000 people have signed a White House petition to have the Canadian singer deported.
The pop star -- who was charged with DUI, resisting arrest and having an expired driver's license after he was observed drag racing with fellow musician Khalil Sharieff at 4:13 a.m. on Thursday -- is living in the U.S. thanks to an O-1 visa, issued to anyone with "extraordinary ability or achievement" in their field, including the arts. Any conviction for an aggravated offense could see Bieber's work visa revoked, prompting immigration officials to toss him out of the country.

"We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture," reads the online petition. "We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug abusing Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked. He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nation's youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society."
But the Miami arrest likely won't affect Bieber's immigration status, according to the AP.
U.S. immigration law states that authorities do not revoke an individual's visa unless the person has been convicted of a violent crime or been sentenced to more than one year imprisonment. For a first DUI offense, there is no minimum sentence and a maximum of six months, a fine of $250 to $500, and 50 hours of community service. For anyone under 21, there is an automatic six-month license suspension. A first conviction for drag racing carries a sentence of up to six months, a fine of $500 to $1,000 and a one-year license suspension.
According to immigration attorney Ira Kurzban, Bieber is "not subject to deportation because of a DUI offense, nor is driving with an expired license a deportable offense." Those offenses wouldn't keep Bieber from being readmitted into the U.S., either.
Bieber's arraignment has been scheduled for Feb. 14. The musician does not have to be present for that arraignment, THR has confirmed with the Miami-Dade State Attorney's Office. His attorney, Roy Black, may be able to handle the proceedings on his behalf. During the arraignment, prosecutors will formally file charges against the 19-year-old singer, and a plea will be entered.
The White House has yet to issue a response to the petition, which is required once a signature goal is met. At press time, the petition has 119,000 supporters.

Saxophonist J. Plunky Branch is an experienced performer, songwriter and music and film producer. He is president of his own independent record label, N.A.M.E. Brand Records, through which he has released 25 albums. At one time Plunky was a studio musician for television's top-rated sitcom, "The Cosby Show.” His song “Every Way But Loose” was a top-ten soul music chart hit in London in the 1980’s. He has appeared on avant-garde jazz albums by Pharaoh Sanders, Hamiet Bluiett and others. Nowadays Plunky spends his time leading his band onstage playing rousing funk, R&B, jazz, African, reggae, gospel and rap and making music in his recording studio.

His latest releases are the CD album Never Too Late, the 5-CD compilation Plunky & Oneness 2012 Collectors Box Set; and his DVD Plunky & Oneness of Juju - Live In Paris. Plunky’s European touring has taken him to England, France, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. He twice toured Ghana, West Africa, once for the Ghana National Commission on Children, and again as a cultural specialist for the U.S. Information Agency. Recently he has performed in Paris; traveled to Brazil; and twice to Cuba to research and produce music recordings and a documentary film, Under the Radar – A Survey of Afro-Cuban Music.

With his group, Plunky & Oneness, he has opened shows for Patti Labelle, Ray Charles, Earth Wind & Fire, Yellow Jackets, and Frankie Beverly & Maze, LL Cool J, Chuck Brown, and more. Plunky & Oneness performed at the New Orleans World’s Fair, the National Black Arts Festival in Atlanta (four times) and twice at the Capital Jazz Festival in Maryland. For more than 15 years Plunky has toured continually with support from the Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA).

Plunky’s career accomplishments are as varied as his music and his diverse interests, which include: African art and culture, history, digital technology, politics and the media. In addition to being a veteran saxophonist and composer, J. Plunky Branch has served as an administrator, lecturer and teacher. He has been a frequent arts panelist for the Virginia Commission for the Arts, the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

 Plunky is a two-time recipient of NEA Jazz Fellowships and he was appointed to the Governor’s Task Force for the Promotion of the Arts in Virginia. He has been Director of the Jazz Ensemble at Virginia Union University as well as an instructor of Afro-American Music History at Virginia Commonwealth University, both in Richmond.

Recognized by Richmond Magazine as Musician of the Year for 1999, Plunky is a sought after artist-in-residence and performer for public schools systems. He has written film scripts, journals of his travels, poems and over 400 songs.

Throughout his career Plunky has entertained and taught thousands, and in the process, has developed a broad and loyal following. During his 1987 West African tour, critics proclaimed Plunky "one of the greatest living saxophonist!" In a context where rhythm, ritual, power and emotion reign supreme, he just might be!

New CD Album Release: Plunky & Oneness / Never Too Late - Release Date: 2/11/2014
Never Too Late, the new album by Afro-funk, jazz veteran, J. Plunky Branch and his group Plunky & Oneness bridges genres and generations. The ambitious 16-song collection includes neo-soul, nu-jazz, and hip-hop songs about love, wisdom and purposeful partying. With Never Too Late Plunky & Oneness prove that eclecticism is no vice and variety can be its own reward.

Produced by Plunky and his talented son, J. “Fire” Branch, Never Too Late is a collage of musical cross references and transmutations. The album begins with neo soul love songs, and it ends with go-go and funk. But, it is the meaningful message music in the middle that is the hip-hop jazz, heart and soul of the album. This is cutting edge stuff produced by Fire sampling Plunky’s songs from the 1970’s, 80’s and 90’s and dubbing in new live performances and looped beats. This is father and son using past and present techniques to create future music.

Funk is grown folks music. Fused with hip-hop, it can be music that delivers the word. On Never Too Late Plunky plays the role of the OG, the “Original Griot”, using lyrics to drop knowledge and to encourage and inspire. He is the “Old Guru” who spits, spouts, and speaks on philosophies of love and life, and advocates getting funky with it. The songs, riding on waves of urban rhythms, live music and deejay effects, convey lessons learned, urging us to “Be About the Future” while feeling our “Tribal Vibe” and acknowledging “We are One.”

Never Too Late, Plunky’s 25th album, is primarily new and original music; however there are two cover songs and a bonus track in the collection. John Legend’s “Tonight (Best You Ever Had),” the album’s first single, is a saxophone-led go-go instrumental with sexy female vocal hooks. Frankie Beverly’s classic, “We Are One,” also rendered as a sax and vocals combo, is still a soulful call to unifying love. The bonus track, “Tableau Noir,” is collaboration with famed French rapper, Akhenaton of the IAM Band. It is a rap song about dark times in the world being like images on a blackboard which can be erased.

The core Oneness group members breathe life into the music on the album. The sultry and soulful Charlayne “Chyp” Green is featured on vocals throughout. Young, VA-based musicians, keyboardist, J. L. Harris and guitarist, Jose Pomier, create shimmering, melodic tonal centers within the grooves. Bassist P. Muzi Branch, Plunky’s brother and long-time collaborator, is still thumping and pumping the bottom of the funk – in sync with Fire’s hip-hop beats and electronic percussion.

Time travel happens when rhythm meets change, when vibrations are altered and re-ordered, when fault lines are crossed, when generations are bridged, when memories create new visions. Never Too Late is all about timeless lessons of love and life and locomotion. Aubrey Wood



Aubrey Wood is an eighteen year old singer/songwriter from West Hartford, Connecticut now living full time in sunny Southern California to build on her already strong musical foundation and pursue a college degree all at the same time. 

She has a passion for quirky indulgences including her daily must ritual to Starbucks, cardigan sweaters and conquering her friends and family in a game of Scrabble.

And now, we are thrilled to say that Aubrey’s exciting new EP, “Picking Petals” has now been recently released ! The music on “Picking Petals” is a bit of a departure from the first EP with an upbeat flair that chronicle stories from Aubrey’s own life (yes, the tales are real !) and features great productions from up and coming producer, Gia Sky, who also performs and contributes great guitar riffs, keyboards and a wealth of fresh innovative sounds. The EP features five new songs including the single, “Love Sick”, whose video can now be seen on YouTube.

Just last year, Aubrey was honored to write and perform the new theme song for the rapidly expanding non-profit organization, Unified Theater. This new composition, “Fly”, was written and performed by Aubrey with the stellar support of Bella Blue and Trevor Jackson on background vocals. Unified Theater is a truly a wonderful organization whose incredible work helps to change the lives of so many. Unified Theater puts the spotlight on ability by creating student-led theater groups that let young people with and without disabilities shine!

In 2010, Aubrey released her first EP titled “Aubrey Wood” with all the music written and performed by Aubrey on vocals and acoustic guitar with a strong assembly of contributing performers including K.C. Porter on keyboard and production, J.B. Eckl on electric guitar, Paul Gonzales on drums, and Sean Hurley on bass. Aubrey’s EP gained a broad following with well over 1,000,000 track plays online and a growing base of listeners on several music streaming sites. Her popular single, “Heart”, has been a consistent presence at the top of the charts on MTV’s OurStage with the music video for the single reaching number one in in multiple months this year and driving nearly 50,000 plays on YouTube !

0111-david-cassidy-tmzDavid Cassidy was arrested Friday night for driving drunk ... TMZ has learned.

David had just exited the 405 freeway in LA when cops say they saw him make an illegal right onto a surface street ... this according to law enforcement sources.

The cop approached the vehicle and says he smelled alcohol. He ordered David out of the car and administered a field sobriety test ... which David flunked.

To make matters worse, David blew .19 ... more than twice the legal limit.

Cassidy was hauled off to jail, booked for driving under the influence and released hours later.

If this sounds like the same old song ... it is. David was arrested last year in New York for DUI ... as well as once in Florida back in 2010.

This time he'll almost certainly get jail time.

If someone had fulfilled Pyongyang's request to pack Eric Clapton off to North Korea, perhaps all that bother on the divided peninsula would never have started. That is what the hermit government of the north reckons, at least, as one of the less pressing Wikileak cables recently revealed that Kim Jong-il's second son, Kim Jong-chol, was "a great fan" of the rock legend and that a Clapton performance in the capital "could be an opportunity to build goodwill". Using pop to build bridges is perhaps naive, especially in the context of a potential nuclear face-off, but maybe we shouldn't rule out the idea.

If you ask a North Korean their true feelings about pretty much anything they'll stick to whatever the party line tells them they should think (which is why so many tourists get frustrated after probing about General Kim's next move). But ask the right questions and the facade that greets most outsiders will occasionally be broached with genuine warmth. During trips I've made in and around the hermit kingdom over the past year, I've used one uncontroversial topic of conversation to do just that. It seems talking about music is one way for North Koreans to relate their perspectives on the world without being politically controversial.

Pop diplomacy will not solve territorial disputes or prevent governments going head-to-head, but it does offer another perspective on North Koreans. Pop weaves its way into North Korea in unexpected ways. Last September, I was held under 24-hour house arrest in the outpost of Raijin after refusing to pay a bribe. The most perturbing part of the experience was not the fact there was no guarantee of release, but that the hotel foyer we were held in had the EastEnders theme tune playing on loop for the duration of the internment through a croaky speaker.

Perhaps the aim was mental attrition; to irritate us into paying bribes by reminding us of the east London we'd left behind and may never see again. It didn't work – I'm from Putney. Eccentric glimpses of the world North Korea left behind are not so few and far between – in this series I'll be revealing more from inside the secret state: the truth about Michael Jackson's North Korean debut; introducing the best of North Korean pop and revealing the Communist cadre's opinion of Jarvis Cocker.
